Developer Basics

Develop what you want, how you want!

  • There are no prerequisites to be a developer. Every system box is capable of being a developer kit.
  • We don't have a complex development system, a developer can use any 64bit linux code.
  • You can use standard APIs and any third party software that supports Linux.
  • Use any development environment you want (including Windows or Linux), any compiler you want, any debugger you want.
  • We will provide dedicated AMD tools in order to profile and debug the GPU.
  • Graphics support includes support for OpenGL, Vulkan and hardware command buffer rendering.

Product

What will be available at launch?

At launch, the Atari VCS system will be available in several configurations and designs. An Atari-designed OS and dashboard will offer a variety of game and entertainment content, and the customizable Sandbox Mode. The VCS Classic Joystick and Modern Controller will also be available.

What games are available?

The Atari VCS will ship with the Atari Vault of more than 100 arcade and home classics. Additional games and content will be available, with details to be announced at a later date prior to launch.

Which multimedia / home apps are available?

On the Atari VCS you will be able to download your favorite home and entertainment apps, such as Redbox, Netflix, VUDU TV & Movies and more; with others to be announced and added post launch.

What is VCS Operating System?

The Atari VCS runs a Custom Atari OS based on a Linux Kernel.

Where do I find the technical specifications?

How much memory (RAM) does the VCS have?

Atari VCS 800 models ship with 8GB of upgradable SoDIMM memory. Atari VCS 400 models will ship with 4GB of upgradable SoDIMM memory.

Is the Atari VCS customizable?

Yes. The Atari VCS is highly customizable, especially in Atari VCS Sandbox Mode. You will be able to upgrade the hardware, customize your gaming experience and make the system your own.

What is Sandbox Mode?

“Sandbox Mode” opens up the full PC architecture of the Atari VCS so users can install a 2nd OS like Windows, Ubuntu or Chrome, and use apps like Steam (etc.) to play AAA games, retro emulators and essentially have a full PC to do anything you want.

When do I get my stuff?

If you preorder from AtariVCS.com or any of our retail partners, expected ship dates start in March 2020.
If you preordered on Indiegogo.com, we plan to start shipping products in December, 2019.

Where do I find it? (Is it available in EU and other countries?)

Atari VCS is currently available in the USA only for online pre-orders on AtariVCS.com, Walmart.com and GameStop.com. Additional stores and international availability to be announced.

Developers

How do I create games for the VCS?

The Atari team will be providing a free and open Atari VCS SDK to all that want to create their own Atari VCS games. For more information, please contact devs@atarivcs.com.

What are the Terms & Conditions for developers?

Included within the SDK will be simple Terms & Conditions that will developer friendly, with a 88/12 revenue share on all exclusive games created and sold on Atari platforms, and a 80/20 on all non-exclusive games sold.
